Probably one of South Africa’s oldest traditions and certainly one of the most practiced, is the eating and making of BILTONG.
The name BILTONG is derived from the words “Bill” meaning buttock and “Tong” meaning strip. Combined it means strip of meat.
Making BILTONG, or the drying and spicing of meat, is an age-old method of preserving meat and was used by many nomadic and pioneering people in various countries.
As a South African delicacy, it was made popular by our pioneering forefathers. They developed special recipes and utilized special curing methods, which are still used by BILTONG DEN today.
